American Honda Announces Updates to Popular Midsize Models
American Honda today revealed three of its 2024 model-year 500cc on-road motorcycles, all of which have received notable updates. The announcement includes the adventure-ready NX500 (formerly known as the CB500X) as well as the sporty CBR500R and the CB500F naked bike.
The versatile NX500 is the perfect gateway to adventure riding, and for 2024 it makes strides in performance while shedding weight. A number of improvements to the chassis, suspension, engine and electronics contribute to an improved on- and off-road package. For riders who prioritize performance on the pavement, the sport CBR500R and naked CB500F also benefit from numerous upgrades, most notably redesigned bodywork and a superior electronic interface. The three models have shared a focus on approachable, rider-friendly design, well-rounded performance and solid reliability.
“Honda’s midsize lineup remains a core focus for the company, as these models suit a wide range of riders, in terms of skill levels and preferred riding experience,” said Colin Miller, Assistant Manager of Public Relations at American Honda. “The advancements made with the NX500, CBR500R and CB500F are aimed at enhancing the experience for all riders, from casual commuters to lifelong enthusiasts. We’re confident that each of these bikes will remain at the forefront of its respective category and continue to deliver memorable rides for years to come.”
All three models are available in dealers now.
NX500
The letters NX have a long history with Honda, thanks to the 1988-’89 NX650 adventure bike. NX means “New X-over,” which is a perfect description for the NX500 (previously called the CB500X). Fun on a winding road or a gravel trail, and ready to go the distance, the machine’s all-around credentials are reinforced with an impressive update to its adventure styling. The wheels are lighter, and the suspension settings have been upgraded to improve ride quality. The slipper-clutch-equipped twin-cylinder engine also benefits from the addition of Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC).

CBR500R
A longtime hit with customers who are looking for performance while also keeping an eye on enjoyment and approachability, Honda’s twin-cylinder midsize sport bike gets an important refresh for the 2024 model year. Among the improvements are sharp, Fireblade-inspired styling (including a new fairing with winglets that improve handling); new LED headlights that increase visibility; a new 5-inch TFT display, offering Honda Selectable Torque Control, delivering peace of mind in slippery conditions. With an unmatched combination of style, performance and affordability, the CBR500R’s popularity among riders of all skill levels comes as no surprise.

CB500F
The CB500F leads the way when it comes to versatility and rider-friendly performance in a naked package, and for 2024 it’s made even more capable. Aggressive new styling yields aerodynamic benefits, while the addition of a 5-inch TFT display and Honda Selectable Torque Control enhance the riding experience. Offering smooth power delivery and a narrow, lightweight chassis design, the CB500F is welcoming for new enthusiasts but maintains a nimble character that can be appreciated by riders of any skill level. Practical yet capable, the CB500F once again proves that sporty performance, eye-catching style and world-class reliability don’t need to come at a price that breaks the bank.

“Mama Tried: Bringing it Together” (on display now)
The Mama Tried® Motorcycle Show and adjoining Flat Out Friday races are a bright spot in the dead of cold, Wisconsin winters. The show has amassed an army of followers and fans that give the weekend its signature style: People are the heart of the show; the bikes are the social lubrication. The Harley-Davidson Museum’s special exhibit, “Mama Tried: Bringing it Together,” focuses on the builders, the racers and the fans that gather over a bike or a brew.
A riot of bikes awaits you: outrageous custom bikes, lovingly restored vintage machines and one as rare as hen’s teeth – 1929 FHAC with FLXI Sidecar Factory Racer. Don’t come alone; bring your crew. That’s what Mama Tried is about, after all. And if you haven’t already tuned in, hear directly from David Kreidler, curator of the exhibit, on theMama Tried podcast.
1972 Custom Sprint 350 Single (on display now)
J. Shia’s unconventional 1972 350cc Sprint custom is on display at the Harley-Davidson Museum. Inspired by Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet “Swan Lake,” Shia designed a dual bike project to reflect both the contrast and parallels of the black and white swans. The “white swan” can now be found at the H-D Museum. Shia’s build style for this project is unique in both function and materials, which she designed and fabricated all out of her Boston-based shop, Madhouse Motors. Shia incorporated unexpected parts from other products to create the bike: The headlight is the projector from a microscope and the taillight is a pencil sharpener. The carburetor intake is a modified juicer, and the foot-pegs are stove handles, while the turbocharger’s exhaust is a soprano saxophone bell. This amazing build is a symbol of ingenuity in moto customization and needs to be seen to be believed.
“My Papi Has a Motorcycle” / “Mi Papi Tiene una Moto” (on display now)
From award-winning children and YA author Isabel Quintero and illustrator Zeke Peña comes the Harley-Davidson Museum’s first-ever bilingual exhibit, “My Papi has a Motorcycle” / “Mi papi tiene una moto.” Based on the beloved children’s book of the same name, “My Papi has a Motorcycle” shares a story of family bonds strengthened by the simple act of taking a joy ride on a two-wheeled machine. With brilliant, colorful art from Peña paired with heart-warming stories from Southern Californian riding families, “My Papi has a Motorcycle” will draw smiles from kids of all ages. It’s an exhibit that focuses not only on where you can take a motorcycle, but where a two-up motorcycle ride with a loved one can take you.
Experience Gallery (on display now)
With inspiring stories from riders who have turned their dream of learning to ride into reality, a look at the epic journeys you can only experience behind the bars of a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, plus the chance to throw a leg over a new 2024 Harley-Davidson® #FreedomMachine, the Experience Gallery shows the world how United We Ride! And now you can hop in the saddle of a limited-edition 2024 Icons Collection Hydra-Glide Revival motorcycle that celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the original with graphics and design cues taken from Hydra-Glide models of the 1950s and ‘60s.
Worthington Scout Overgreen Engine (on display now)
In 1927, the Worthington Lawn Mower Company launched the Scout Overgreen model, the first walking mower with three connected – also known as “ganged” – decks. Between 1929 and 1935, Worthington contracted Harley-Davidson to build about 500 engines for the innovative triplex mowers.
Long-Time Riders: Lee & Pearl (on display now)
At the H-D Museum entrance, a new case featuring two long-time Wisconsin riders is on display. Lee and Pearl Christopherson have been together since meeting on a motorcycle in 1958. Lee was a member of the Blue Knights, a group of active or retired law enforcement officers. While Lee can’t begin to guess how many miles he’s ridden over 76 years, Pearl has kept track of her time in the saddle and surpassed 175,000 miles in the summer of 2023. The display features Pearl’s Motor Maids shirt and vest along with a Blue Knights Club vest from Lee, and the couple’s H.O.G.® patch and pin collection.
Clubs & Competition (on display now)
The early days of motorcycle culture were marked by board track racing, hillclimbs, endurance events, and more. Our latest Clubs & Competition gallery update is a reflection of how these riders shaped the future of bikes.
In the early part of the 20th century, motorcycle culture was a homegrown phenomenon. It grew out of the passion of riders for their evolving sport. The camaraderie that developed around riding and attending competitive events led to the formation of motorcycle clubs that hosted destination rides, family picnics with motorcycle games and other riding competitions.
The latest clothing selection on view in the gallery includes uniforms from clubs organized by region or city. Some of the clubs represented in the case are the Beer City Riders from right here in Milwaukee; the Red Wing Motorcycle Club in Detroit; and the Aztec Motorcycle Club from National City, California. The H-D Archives collection includes Motorclothes® apparel sold in H-D® product catalogs but also non-H-D produced clothing items that have been proudly customized by riders.

Check Your Blind Spots – An Extra Look Can Save a Life
More motorcyclists will be on the roads as spring weather welcomes the riding season, and this May, during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, all motorists are urged to take an extra look — double check your blind spots — before turning or changing lanes, because that extra second could save a life.
“Motorcyclists, with their smaller profiles, can easily ‘vanish’ in a vehicle’s blind spots,” said Scott Schloegel, Acting President and CEO of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. “Even though many cars today have blind-spot detection systems, they aren’t a fail-safe. So we urge car and truck drivers to actively be on the lookout for motorcyclists. Use your eyes and mirrors and look twice, especially in your blind spots, before maneuvering on the road.”
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers the following top tips for drivers and motorcyclists so that everyone can stay safe on the roadways.
For Car and Truck Drivers
- Actively look for motorcyclists: Motorcyclists can easily be hidden in blind spots or by other vehicles, bushes, trees, or roadway signs, so use your eyes and mirrors to check all around you before maneuvering into or around traffic.
- Focus on driving: Put down the phone; don’t let pets and passengers distract you.
- Use your turn signals: Signal your intentions. It can help others know what to expect or even alert them to get out of your way if they are in your blind spot.
- Give two-wheelers some space: Don’t tailgate or get too close when you are next to riders. Give them space to maneuver and adjust to roadway conditions.
- Keep it in the vehicle: Don’t throw trash or cigarettes out the window. Make sure cargo is secured so it doesn’t fall onto the road and become a hazard.
For Motorcycle and Scooter Riders
- Be visible: Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet. Always have your headlight on, day and night, and avoid riding in the blind spots of other vehicles. If possible, flash your brake light when slowing and before stopping.
- But pretend you are invisible: If you assume others can’t see you, you will tend to ride in a hyper-aware mindset and learn to notice every detail in your surroundings. Constantly search for changing conditions using the Search-Evaluate-Execute strategy (SEE) to assess and respond to hazards before you have to react to an emergency.
- Gear up every ride: Wear proper riding gear from head to toe. Full-face helmets provide the best protection. Jackets, pants, gloves, and boots specifically made for riding will generally have abrasion-resistant material and extra armor for better protection.
- Follow the rules of the road: Riding respectfully — and legally — creates a safer environment for everyone. Unexpected maneuvers could startle or confuse others and cause a crash.
- Before you ride, look over your bike: Do a pre-ride check, which includes looking over your tires and wheels, checking fluids, cables, your bike’s chassis, lights and electronics, and the stands. Use the T-CLOCS inspection checklist to help.
“According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) in 2022 – the last year of complete data – motorcycle fatalities were up 1.2 percent,” said Schloegel. “Motorcyclists represented 15 percent of fatalities despite only being 3 percent of the vehicles on roadways. It’s everyone’s responsibility to keep the roadways safe.”
