We’ve previously spoken about the winter slump and some housekeeping tips but here is one that you can do anytime of the year. In fact, it’s probably something that should be done several times a year.
I’m talking about auditing your website. In today’s digital society, now more than ever a professional website that projects the right message is essential.
But I don’t have the time to look at the entire site you might say. I content that you do not have the time not to. But here is a way to make it a little less time-consuming.
- Find the Site Map for your website.
- Take each of those pages and put them into a spreadsheet.
- On the spreadsheet list the page, the date, and three more columns labeled as follows. Typos & Grammatical Errors, Broken Links, Outdated Content.
Once your checklist is complete, start at the top and work your way through page by page paying attention to everything on the page. Typo & grammatical errors make your store look unprofessional so tighten them up. If you’re not up to the task, use a web-based application like Grammarly. Check each link, and #1 make sure it’s complete, and #2 make sure it connects to where you want it to go. Finally, ensure the content is current by removing old and outdated content. Nothing makes your site look stale like old sales and images.
Ideally, you’ll be able to make the changes and corrections by yourself or with your current staff but if not take the page by page assessment and pass it along to your web developer for implementation. While the first time through, you’ll probably have a bunch of items to correct, a continual look at your site should lead to fewer changes each time.
Put the process in place today and put your best digital face forward.
As always the ideas expressed above are my own and I make no claims to the success or failure of implementing them. They are suggestions to make you think. Please vet all ideas against your business plan before implementing them.
